Shape & construction

Material Selection

The choice of material and where it's used has been a key factor in the development of our wave sail range. Instead of increasing the shape in the panels, we chose to vary the sail materials and carefully adjust the thickness for each area. From mast to clew, soft dacron is used in the luff, then 2 MIL x/scrim-ply in the top/front and 4 MIL x/scrim-ply in the base. All panels along the leech are thicker 5 MIL x/warp-ply. Compared to the 4-Wave, the 5-Wave has a larger area in 5 MIL for better high-wind performance.

Design Details

As a final touch, we have studied our own Kevlar load-spreading lines connecting the clew, B1 tip, and the two innovative mini-battens in the luff – the secret behind its incredible wind range. We have also focused on making the sail as light as possible without compromising durability against tough wipeouts.

Trim

The 5-Wave offers the same extended trim range for both downhaul and outhaul as the 4-Wave. First, set your preferred downhaul to determine how loose the leech should be – less downhaul gives a more baggy feel for freestyle/wave riding, a more open leech is suitable for down-the-line sailing and high-wind jumps. Then, primarily use the outhaul to set the desired amount of profile, power, and drive.

Usage

Suits those who want a more playful feel than the 4-Wave – the 5-Wave has less back-hand power and is well-suited for lighter sailors, while the 4-Wave is better for heavier sailors and lighter winds. A good crossover choice for freestyle/wave sailing.

Pro tips

Bastien Escofet, Professional Surfer

“The playful feeling of the 5Wave favours lighter riders like me, as this 5-batten sail has less backhand power than our 4Wave. So don't confuse this 5-batten concept with the standard approach of other brands who usually design a 4-batten sideshore sail and a 5-batten onshore wave. It's different here. With our sails, the 4Wave actually has more grind and drive than the 5Wave, which also performs awesome in strong winds. The 4Wave is perfect in lighter winds and for heavier riders though.”
