Shape & construction

Construction

Material selection and placement has been a key issue in the development of our wave sail range. Instead of increasing shape in the panels (which increases seam load and reduces wind range) we chose to vary the sail materials and carefully adapt the thickness for each area. From mast to clew soft dacron is used in the luff, then 2 MIL x/scrim-ply in the top/front and 4 MIL x/scrim-ply in the base. All panels along the leech are thicker 5 MIL x/warp-ply. This mix helps the wind blow the sail exactly where you want it, without the depth moving backwards when the wind blows harder.

As a final touch, we have studied our own Kevlar load distribution lines that connect the clew, the top and the two innovative mini-battens in the luff – the secret behind the incredible wind range. We have also focused on making the sail as light as possible without compromising on durability against tough wipeouts – our own view on sustainability.

Trim

4-Wave offers an extended trim register on both downhaul and outhaul. First, set your favourite downhaul to determine how loose the leech should be – less downhaul gives a baggier feel for freestyle/wave riding, more open leech suitable for down-the-line sailing and high-wind jumps. Then, primarily use outhaul to set the desired amount of profile, power and drive.

Usage

Suitable for sailors who want a smooth, powerful wave sail with fast response – feel free to try one size smaller than you normally use, the sail's efficiency and low-speed power more than compensate, while also giving you faster rotations and better wipeout resistance.

Pro tips

Henning Terstiege, R&D Team

“Rig your 4-Wave one size smaller than you usually do. For example, choose the 4.8 in typical 5.0 conditions. The sail's incredible efficiency and powerful low-end characteristics keep you on the wave even close to shore, while still giving you the advantages of a smaller size: faster response, quicker rotations, and less risk of damage.”
